My First Coaching Class

My First Coaching Class

Over the past few weeks, I created a coaching service called GLAX (Girls Lacrosse). The goal is to provide premier Lacrosse coaching in the Bay Area designed specifically for young athletes. From first-time players to those sharpening their skills, our small-group sessions ensure every girl gets the attention she needs to succeed.

Today I had my first coaching lesson. It went really well. It took place at La Entrada Field in Menlo Park. I coached a 8-year old girl who has been playing for one year. I had prepared this lesson plan:

  • Quick Assessment (10 mins): We'll start by just messing around with the stick to evaluate the player's current comfort level and figure out their baseline.
  • Ground Balls (10 mins): Working on the best way to scoop up loose balls smoothly on the run.
  • Catching & Throwing (15 mins): Playing easy partner catch and teaching players how to cushion the ball so it stays in their stick.
  • Moving with the Ball (15 mins): Doing some fun cone drills and games to get players comfortable running while cradling.
  • Free shots (10 mins): Ending the hour on a high note by letting players rip some shots at the open field.

The girl improved on the following aspects:

  • Getting her arms off her body while throwing.
  • Making nice, long, even passes.
  • Cradle.

I think she enjoyed it. She wants to be back for more lessons. She said she might bring some of her friends who also play Lacrosse.
